Kids take journey to 'Wonderland'
Rodger Mullen
While you wait for the opening of the Tim Burton-Johnny Depp re-imagining of "Alice in Wonderland" March 5, Carolina Civic Center is offering a junior version.
The Lumberton civic center will stage a children's version of the Lewis Carroll classic, "Alice in Wonderland Jr.," Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
Directed by Bethann Cox as part of the new Kids on Stage series, the cast consists of local actors high school age and under.
Some of the proceeds from the play will benefit Lumberton actor Robbie Barr, who was injured in an automobile accident. Barr also appears in the play.
Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children. The civic center is at 315 N. Chestnut St. Call 910-738-4339 or go to www.carolinaciviccenter.com.
'Pedals, pipes, pizza'
Everybody like pizza. Most people like the pipe organ.
Both will be featured when the Cape Fear chapter of the American Guild of Organists holds a "Pedals, Pipes and Pizza" program Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at First Presbyterian Church, 102 Ann St. The program was rescheduled from Jan. 31.
Anyone with an interest in the pipe organ is welcome.
"We talk about the pipe organ and the sound it makes, then we take the group up to the pipe chamber so they can see the pipes," said Mark Gourley, director of music at the church.
Afterwards, there's pizza for everyone. For more information, call 483-0121 or go to www.agohq.org/chapters/capefear.
'Playballs'
It's the final innings for Gilbert Theater's production of "Playballs."
The theater concludes its run of the play with performances through Sunday.
"Playballs" tells the story of real-life umpire Pam Postema, who was the first and only woman to call balls and strikes at the Major League level.
Shows are today, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10.
The theater is at 116 Green St
