Downtown Fayetteville shines on Oscar night

Downtown Fayetteville will be the place to be tonight to celebrate the Oscars.

The Partnership for Children of Cumberland County is hosting the Evening with the Stars Oscar party at the Cameo Art House Theatre. The Academy Awards telecast will be shown on the big screen as guests dressed as movie characters from this year's nominated films will compete for the coveted best costume prize.

"It's a great showcase of downtown," said Donna Mansfield, board chairwoman for the Partnership for Children. "There's a lot to offer here in Fayetteville."

The night starts with a pre-party at the Arts Center at 301 Hay St., where drinks and heavy hors d'oeuvres (catered by Circa 1800) will be served. When the Oscars start at 8 p.m., guests will make their way to the Cameo at 225 Hay St. for the telecast. Tickets cost $60 per person or $100 per couple. Cameo Theatre members pay $40.

The event is a fundraiser for the Partnership for Children's programs. A silent auction, including the chance to win a Disney family vacation, will be offered as well as raffle prizes.

Maureen McKeon, communications manager for the Partnership for Children, said they are expecting at least 200 people to attend this year's event. About 150 people came last year.

"The rumor is that we're going to have an Avatar there," McKeon said. "It's a lot of fun. The food is good. The entertainment is good. The costumes are great."
